Rozana Lee participated in a month-long residency programme at Studio Kura in Fukuoka, Japan, which culminated with the exhibition Spring is as sweet as shirotsumekusa, opened to the public over 25 and 26 May 2024.

In this body of work, Lee seeks to capture the lightness and vibrancy of spring at the same time highlights the circle of life and transience of things, a concept associated with the Japanese idea of “mono no aware” (物の哀れ). By pairing several nature-inspired symbols encountered during her travels in 2024 – the quatrefoil from Germany’s Gothic-style churches, the shippō, a prominent four-petal motif in Japanese culture, and the four-leaved white clovers found around Studio Kura – with the contrasting geometric shapes of her studio floor, Lee forms an indexical relationship with the space, rendering a haptic sense of place.
